NEBOSH General Certificate

The NEBOSH National General Certificate training course provides a sound introduction to the basics of occupational health and safety. It looks at the management of health and safety and a wide variety of workplace hazards. The NEBOSH General Certificate is taken by delegates from a vast range of backgrounds who are already in, or looking for, a career in the health and safety sector.

Anyone can enrol on the NEBOSH Certificate programme as no previous health and safety knowledge is required.  Delegates will be required to write short reports as part of the training and exam.

Successful delegates will be awarded the NEBOSH General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety on completion of the course. The NEBOSH Certificate is accepted by IOSH – the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health – in meeting the academic requirements for Technician Membership of IOSH (Tech IOSH). It is also accepted by The International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM) for associate membership.

Course Objectives

On successful completion of the NEBOSH General Certificate course candidates will be able to: -

  • Understand the legal framework, moral & economic requirements & implications for good standards in health & safety within an organisation.
  • Develop, promote & communicate an effective health & safety culture in an organisation.
  • Identify the key features of a health & safety policy, the preparations & performance review of a health & safety audit.
  • Understand the importance of proactive & reactive health & safety monitoring measures.
  • Identify hazards in the workplace & carry out risk assessments, record findings & review procedures.
  • Advise on strategies for controlling hazards, reducing risks & applying safe systems of work.
  • Identify fire hazards & consequential risks, advise on measures to minimise fire risks & develop fire procedures.
  • Identify ill health effects of physical processes of work & the environment & recommend suitable measures to combat risks.

Assessment

The NEBOSH General Certificate assessment is by an end-of-course examination comprising two written papers - NGC1 (The management of safety and health) and NGC2 (Controlling workplace hazards) - and a practical assessment (NGC3) which consists of carrying out a health and safety inspection of a workplace and preparing a management report. Delegates are responsible for submitting their assessments within the required timescales. If assessments are not submitted by this time the candidate will fail the course.
