CIEH Level 2 Award in Food Safety  

Length of course: 1 Day

This qualification is designed for anyone working in catering where food is prepared, cooked and handled. Whether you are a business or private individual this is an essential qualification to obtain.

A typical business where the food handlers would need to have obtained this qualification would include:

Everyone who works with food has a special responsibility for safeguarding the health of consumers and ensure that the food they serve or sell is perfectly safe to eat. This course will give food handlers a good understanding of the importance of food safety and how to prevent food poisoning and contamination from occurring.

Successful completion of the training programme and assessment will ensure candidates have met the following objectives:

  • Firm grasp of the importance of food safety and knowledge of the systems, techniques and procedures involved
  • Understanding of how to control food safety risks (personal hygiene, food storage, cooking and handling)
  • Confidence and expertise to safely deliver quality food to customers

The examination of the Level 2 in Food Safety in Catering will consist of an examination paper with 30 multiple choice questions. Candidates will be given 1 hour to complete this. In order to pass the exam, candidates must achieve 20 correct answers or more.

CIEH Level 2 Award in Health & Safety in the Workplace 

Length of course: 1 Day

The CIEH Level 2 Award in Health and Safety in the Workplace is designed to ensure that all employees are aware of their own safety and the safety of customers, contractors and the public.

This course is relevant for all types of employees and all industries.
 

Employers are responsible for providing safe and healthy workplace conditions as well as the right systems and methods for safe activities. Nevertheless employees also have a vital part to play in the equation. They need the right knowledge and the right attitude which demands proper training in the basics of health and safety, as well as specific training for individual tasks.

Successful completion of the training programme and assessment will ensure candidates are able to:

  • Understanding the principles of health and safety and accident prevention
  • Ability to contribute to any health and safety management system
  • Understand the importance of risk assessment as a technique for accident and ill health prevention
  • Understand the responsibilities placed on employers and employees
  • Understand the hazard, risk and main causes of harm to workers (manual handling, hazardous substances, exposure to noise and vibration)
  • Understand the importance of following systems, procedures and rules
  • Understand how individual action can reduce risks to health and safety
  • Appreciate how workplace equipment and task design affect health and safety

Fire Awareness 

Length of course: 1/2 Day

This course has been designed to give attendees the knowledge and understanding of what to do in an emergency situation and how to use portable fire fighting equipment found in their premises. It is for all staff who need to be given fire safety training, and will help employers fulfill their obligations under the new Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005.

On completion of the course candidates will be able to: -

  • show an understanding of the dangers of fire and its affects
  • demonstrate the actions to take on hearing the fire alarm
  • demonstrate the actions to take on discovering a fire
  • recognise the correct type of portable fire fighting equipment
  • operate a water and CO² extinguisher (where appropriate)

The course will be approximately 3 hours long and candidates who take part will receive an attendance certificate.

Emergency First Aid at Work

Length of course: 1 Day

This course has been designed for any member of an organisation who is likely to find themselves taking charge of, or who has been appointed to take charge of, first aid equipment during a first aid emergency, in the absence of a qualified First Aider. This is a one-day course recommended by the HSE as the minimum level of training for persons in low-risk workplace environments.

The aim of the course is to provide participants with sufficient knowledge and confidence to deal with an accident until a qualified first aider or the emergency services take charge of the situation.

All candidates should be aware that the course is of a practical nature therefore casual clothes should be worn. Female personnel attending are advised to wear trousers.

Certification is dependent on successful continuous assessment of the student, there is no final exam. Those students who complete the course and are deemed to have reached the required standard are issued with a certificate which is valid for three years.

The HSE strongly recommends that all first aiders complete a half-day refresher course annually.
