ONLINE Instructor-Led MSHA Part 48 (A) New Miner Training Course

Overview

This virtual MSHA Part 48 (A) New Miner Training Course will be delivered remotely, using instructor-led online learning.  This course content remains the same as classroom-based training, however, you’ll attend a scheduled, interactive class via video conferencing.

Part 48 Subpart A applies to underground work on coal, metal, and non-metal mines. 

The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) Part 48A New Miner Training course is designed to meet the regulatory requirements to keep workers, contractors, and field representatives safe while working at a mine.  MSHA Part 48 regulations require workers to complete a minimum of 24-40-Hours of Training prior to working in an underground role at a mine site. 

*PLEASE NOTE - THIS COURSE IS ONLY APPLICABLE TO PART 48 SUBPART A AND WILL NOT APPLY TO WORKERS SEEKING SURFACE CERTIFICATION COVERED IN PART 48 SUBPART B*

Objectives

At the end of this online instructor-led mine safety training course, successful students will demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of the hazards associated with working underground at a mine site and be able to minimize the risks.

Agenda

The virtual MSHA Part 48 (A) New Miner Training course will cover the following topics:

  • Instruction in the statutory rights of miners and their representatives under the Act;
  • Authority and responsibility of supervisors
  • Self-rescue and respiratory devices
  • Entering and leaving the mine; transportation; communications
  • Introduction to the work environment
  • Mine map; escapeways; emergency evacuation; barricading
  • Roof or ground control and ventilation plans
  • Health
  • Cleanup; rock dusting
  • Hazard recognition
  • Electrical hazards
  • First aid
  • Mine gases
  • Health and safety aspects of the tasks to which the new miner will be assigned

Assessment

Attendees will be required to attend full learning hours and achieve a passing score on all tests and assessments.  On successful completion of this New Miner Training, students will receive a 5000-23 MSHA certificate which is valid for 12 months.
