FAQs
  • Does OSHA require a driver’s license to operate a forklift?

No, a standard motor vehicle operator’s license is not required to operate a forklift. In fact, a common misconception is viewing the operation of a forklift in the same manner as the operation a regular automobile. The minimum age, however, to operate a forklift is defined as 18 years of age by the Fair Labor Standards Act for non-agricultural work and also requires successful completion of a training program meeting the requirements detailed in OSHA standards.

  • How do I become a certified forklift operator?

In order to become a certified forklift operator, you must successfully complete a training program that meets the requirements outlined in the OSHA standards. This includes completion of a theory or classroom training course, practical evaluation of the trainee while operating the machine, and evaluation of the operator’s performance in the workplace.

  • How long is forklift training valid?

It is a requirement of the OSHA standard to be re-evaluated every three years or retained sooner if they are observed operating the vehicle unsafely, involved in an accident or near-miss, operate a different type of forklift for the type they were trained on, or experience a change in workplace conditions.

  • Is online forklift training valid?

Yes, although other elements will be required in addition to the online training. Forklift training standards require that training must include a classroom or theory portion as well as a practical element that involves actual operation of the forklift. While online training may satisfy the classroom or theory portion of these requirements, the practical element cannot be performed online. Online training is valid but only for a portion of the training and cannot be used as a sole source for certification.
