The importance of OSHA 10 training

When you think of training, what comes to mind? Maybe you picture a long, tedious day spent in a stuffy classroom with an underwhelming instructor. Or maybe you feel you already possess the necessary skills to do your job, so why bother?

But what if we looked at training as a means to improve performance while keeping employees safe? Or, simply put: proper training can save lives and money.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s (OSHA) 10-hour course for construction and OSHA general industries 10 hour course is designed to do just that.

What is it?

At its core, OSHA’s 10-hour training course was created to help employees identify, correct and avoid potential workplace hazards.

As an employee, taking OSHA 10-hour training not only ensures you have the right knowledge to avoid injuries or being killed while on the job, but you can also:

  • Update and improve your resume
  • Seek additional work opportunities
  • Receive new or preferred employment
  • Be a champion of safety and lead by example

Why invest in OSHA 10 training?

“But training costs a lot of money!” some people argue. And so does a worker’s comp claim. According to a study conducted by The Center for Construction Research and Training (CPRW,) a single jobsite accident can cost a company millions of dollars. For example, the direct costs for an electric shock are more than $90,000 and the indirect costs are over $100,000. Using OSHA’s $afety Pays calculator, a company would need $6.5 million to pay both direct and indirect costs associated with the electric shock accident.

Investing hundreds of dollars to train workers is a mere drop in the piggy bank when compared to accident-related direct and indirect costs. Seems like a no-brainer.

Other than economic benefits, companies that invest in OSHA-10 training will also see:

  • Reduced workplace accidents
  • Increased company standards
  • Increased understanding on how to handle workplace hazards

Employers who train their staff are reinforcing the importance of a safety culture, and this culture not only benefits the company, but also everyone involved.

The OSHA 10 Construction course was designed for students to achieve regulatory compliance. It covers:

  • Fall Protection
  • Ladder Safety
